Pixelmator Pro has more than 40 image editing tools for retouching, reshaping, painting, drawing, adding shapes, text, styles, and effects, adjusting colors, selecting image areas, moving and arranging elements.

To start using a tool, click to select it in the Show or Hide Tools from the View menu at the top of your screen. See Interface overview to learn more about the Tools sidebar. Some of the tools in the Tools sidebar are grouped. You can also move tools out of their assigned groups onto the Tools sidebar as standalone tools. See Customize the Tools sidebar to learn more. The Style tool can be used to customize the look of layers by adding fills, strokes, shadows, and inner shadows. You can also adjust layer transparency or the way layers blend with other layers. Use the Arrange tool to move, rotate, resize, or change the position of layers in a document. With the Arrange tool selected, you can also click Transform at the bottom of the Tool Options pane to transform layers in other ways — for example, stretch, skew, adjust perspective or resize using special algorithms.

The Zoom tool lets you easily zoom and navigate an image. Use the Hand tool to scroll and pan an image when zoomed in. Use the Crop tool to crop and straighten images. The Slice tool lets you create individual images from layers or layer groups in your design and prepare each slice for export separately, using its own optimization settings.

Color Picker. Use the Color Picker tool to sample colors from images, save them as swatches, create and manage your color palettes. Use the Type tools to add and customize text in images.

You can add circular text, make text wrap around shapes or the paths you draw, and more. Once you’ve added a text, you can customize it by changing its font, color, size, alignment, or spacing.

Circular Type. Path Type. Freeform Type. Add text to a path or shape drawn using the Freeform Pen tool. Selection tools let you define and work on a specific area of an image without changing anything outside the bounds of the selection.

You can work with shape-based selection tools, draw selections by hand, or use smart selection tools to select entire objects or specific colors in images. Rectangular Selection. Elliptical Selection. Row Selection. Column Selection. Makes vertical selections of a custom width. Free Selection. Polygonal Selection. Magnetic Selection. Makes selections that snap to object edges.

Color Selection. Quick Selection. There are three different groups of painting tools in Pixelmator Pro — brushes, erasers, and fill tools. Use brushes to create digital, traditional, or pixel art. Fill layers and selections with a solid color or gradient using the Fill tools. Touch up the drawings you’ve made using the painting tools or erase any other pixel-based layers using the Erase tools.

The Paint tool lets you choose from a range of different brushes, including pencils, crayons, sprays, markers, paintbrushes, basic brushes, and more. You can use these default brushes or add some custom ones to create digital or traditional paintings, sketches, illustrations, and more.

Pixel Paint. The Pixel Paint tool lets you paint or erase using square, pixel-shaped blocks. Color Fill. Fill an entire layer, selection or just the specific area in an image with your chosen solid color.

Gradient Fill. Fill a layer or a selection with a gradual transition between two or more colors. The Erase tool lets you erase image areas using any brush in your collection. Smart Erase. The Smart Erase tool erases similarly colored areas of an image. There are five types of retouching and reshaping tools in Pixelmator Pro. Sharpening, softening, and smudging tools emphasize or tone down certain details in an image. Saturation tools make your image less or more vibrant.

Reshaping tools distort areas in an image as you paint over them. The final group — clone and repair tools — let you paint using image textures. You can use these tools to remove unnecessary objects or duplicate them. The Smudge tool smudges a specific area of an image, similarly to dragging wet paint.

Use the Darken tool to darken a specific area of an image. Make the colors in a specific area of an image more vivid and vibrant. Make the colors in a specific area of an image less vivid and vibrant. The Warp tool lets you push and pull a specific area of an image in any direction. The Bump tool moves pixels away from the center of the brush towards the edges, creating a bloated look.

The Twirl tool rotates pixels right or left as you drag, creating a whirlwind look.

Is it possible to increase the size of the tool icons for Pixelmator but the Pro has the ability to resize the tools palette and make it bigger. The tools palette has two layouts that you can toggle between and each of the two views are configurable. To switch between them, use the menu option: View.

Tue Aug 14, am Have you found out how this works, yet? I have the same question. Tue Aug 14, pm Pixelmator Pro uses the native Apple Colors window and you can save custom colors to it pretty easily. Here’s one way: 1. Select a color using whichever method you prefer. Drag the color from the big swatch in the bottom left to one of the smaller swatches in the bottom right.

Another way you can save colors is in the third Color palettes tab of the Colors window. Here, you’ll also be able to give your colors names and organize them more easily. To create a new color palette and add your colors to it, do the following: 1.

Click the Color palettes tab at the top of the Colors window. Click the Action pop-up menu gear icon and choose New. Here’s a screenshot of what this looks like:.

There’s also a separate Color Picker tool you can use to manage colors and color palettes, change the color picker settings, and more. The Pixelmator Pro color picker allows you to quickly choose colors for different tools, color adjustments, or effects, and it appears when you click any color well. The tool consists of two main sections — color picker and color swatches.

The top section features an eyedropper for picking colors, the color square with a hue slider for choosing a custom color, and the HEX and RGB color code fields for entering specific color values. In the Swatches section, you can choose a color from the existing color palettes or reuse some of your recently selected colors. Tip: To quickly fill an image, drag the color you want from the color well in the toolbar or any color well in Pixelmator Pro onto any object, shape, or selection in your image.

Find the value of a color: Click , then hover the pointer over the color to see its value or click to pick it. The color value changes as you move from one color to another on the canvas. Choose a color: Click a color swatch in a selected color palette, or use the hue slider and the color field to choose a custom one. The color picker uses the HSB-based hue, saturation, brightness color model, so to choose a color, drag the hue slider, then specify its saturation and brightness by moving a point in the color field above.

Manage the color palettes: Click the Color Palettes pop-up menu to browse your existing palettes or click the adjacent More menu to remove, rename, and add new palettes. Save colors to use again: In the list of color swatches, click. This adds the currently selected color to the color palette. You can also drag a swatch directly from the recently selected colors to the color palette.

If you’re looking to manage your color palettes and swatches more easily, or if you’d like to change how the color picker samples colors or what information it displays, you can choose a Color Picker tool and change these settings. Note: Pixelmator Pro remembers the settings you choose, the swatches you add, or the color palettes you create, so you can work with the same settings and colors across multiple documents.

To reset foreground and background colors to white and black press D on your keyboard. You can use the macOS Colors window in Pixelmator Pro, to access the native macOS color pickers such as the color wheel, sliders, or pencils.

The Colors window has four sections: the different color pickers at the top color wheel, color sliders, color palettes, image palettes, and pencils ; the active color picker in the middle; the large color swatch in the lower-left to show the currently selected color; the eyedropper for picking colors; and the row of boxes to pick or save new color swatches.

Important: Colors in the color wells update based on the tool or the layer selected, so if you select a color for one tool, the colors don’t change for others except for the painting tools. Consequently, if you leave the Colors window open for one tool, and select another object in the canvas, clicking colors in the already open Colors window does not change the newly selected object.

Some tools in Pixelmator Pro let you fill an object with a transition between two or more colors instead of one solid color. You can choose from the gradient presets that come with Pixelmator Pro or create and save your own.

You can also fill any layer with a gradient using the Gradient Fill effect. A gradient will always have at least two colors. Each color is represented by color stops on a fill bar.

You can change how the gradient looks by adding or removing stops, adjusting their position, and setting the color and transparency of each.

Press I on your keyboard. Customize the color picker settings: Adjust the color picker sample size: “1 point sample” selects color from a single pixel in an image. You can also choose “3 by 3 average” or “5 by 5 average” to read the average value of the area within the adjacent 3 by 3 or 5 by 5 pixels. Show color names: Select the “Show closest color name” checkbox to show a color name closest to the picked color value, or deselect to hide it.

To switch between foreground and background colors, do any of the following: Press X on your keyboard. Click the switch arrow in the toolbar. Open the Colors window by doing one of the following: Click in the color picker popover.

Do any of the following: Choose a color for a selected text, shape, color adjustment, or effect: Click the color picker tab at the top of the Colors window, then choose a color.

You can specify a more precise color by using the sliders or entering values. Pick a color: Click the eyedropper, then click anywhere on the computer screen to choose a color.

Save colors to use again: At the bottom of the Colors window, drag the color from the larger color swatch on the left to an empty well on the right. To remove a color, drag it to the Trash in the Dock. Colors saved to the color swatches library remain accessible across applications and restarts. If the Color Fill tool is selected, double-click to switch to the Gradient Fill.

Press G on your keyboard. Click the gradient presets pop-up menu to choose from the existing gradients or choose any gradient to start customizing it. Customize the gradient: Change colors: Click any of the existing color stops to open the color picker and choose a color. Add additional colors: Click below the gradient fill bar to add a new color stop. Remove colors : To remove a color stop, drag it away from the gradient fill bar.

Reverse colors : Click Reverse to reverse the gradient colors. Choose a gradient type : Linear gradient — Blends colors between color stops, all along a line. Radial gradient — Blends from start to end in a circular pattern. Angle gradient — Blends colors in a sweep. Click and drag on the canvas to apply the gradient. In the Fill Type pop-up menu, choose Gradient. You can also search for the effect by name. Previous Undo or redo changes. Next Use the Pixelmator Pro Photos extension.
